KNOWING GOD’S WILL IN LIFE

(Walking In God’s Will : WIGW 1)

The Bible tells us in Ephesians 5:17: “Do not be foolish, but understand what the Lord’s will is”. To understand God’s will, we need first to know or discover what it is. The Word of God will show us what God’s will is for our life, if we sincerely desire to know it. But many Christians are afraid of seeking God’s will, because they are afraid it will be against their own aspiration or desires. Some are even afraid that God may want them to sacrifice all their wealth for missions, or to become missionaries! Such are controlled by their carnal nature or the spirit of fear.

The Lord Jesus gave a warning that we all must heed: “Not everyone who says to Me, “Lord, Lord”, will enter the Kingdom of Heaven, but only the one who does the will of My Father in Heaven” (Matt.7:21). By this Word alone, not many “so-called” Christians will ever enter Heaven, even though they say they believe in Jesus. This is a cause for some serious heart-searching on our part:“Am I walking in the Father’s will?”

The human heart of flesh will generally not want to know or walk in God’s will. That is because we are selfish and self-centered in nature. We only want to do our own thing; live our own life and enjoy ourselves in worldly pursuits. It is only when we realize how empty our life is and that we are actually walking in circles that we will seek God. That is the divine moment and the conviction of the Holy Spirit. Then something will begin to happen.

Then God will start speaking to us and moving our heart to do what He wants. Philippians 2:3 says: “For is it God Who works in you to will and to act in order to fulfill His good purpose”. Notice this desire is no more from our own human nature: “It is God Who is at work in you”. When we come to the end of ourselves and then seek God, He begins His work in us through His Holy Spirit. He will put His desire or will in our heart and eventually turn it into a deep conviction in our spirit man. We cannot run from it. It will be deeply rooted in our whole being.

The next thing God will do is to enable us to “act in order to fulfill His good purpose”. Where the will is, there is the enabling grace to perform it. No matter how difficult God’s revealed will may seem, we will be able to do it. As Paul said, “I can do all things through Christ Who strengthens me” (Phil.4:13). It is God “Who is at work in you to will and to act”. He through His Holy Spirit will empower us to fulfill His will in us. Just walk in faith and obedience.

Notice the reason for His revealed will: “in order to fulfill His good purpose”. This good purpose is His perfect plan for us because of His great love for His children. Every good father has the best intention for his children. God is our Perfect Heavenly Father Who is also Almighty. We can believe that He will have the very best for us. His Promise to us is: “I know the plans I have for you”, declares the LORD, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future” (Jer.29:11). Our future is safe in His hands and our hope is secure for He will do this “in order to fulfill His good purpose”. Praise the Lord!
