FIGHT THE GOOD FIGHT

(Spiritual Warfare: SW 22)

Let us now sum up what we have been learning about Spiritual Warfare. The moment we decide to follow Jesus as Lord and Savior we are enlisted in His army as soldiers to “fight the good fight of faith” (1 Tim.6:12; 2 Tim.2:3-4). Satan has already declared war on the Church and all those Christians who love God and obey His Son (Rev.12:17). So, whether we like it or not he is on the warpath, like a roaring lion seeking to devour us (1 Pet.5:8). So don’t be complacent!

How can we fight and win the war against the forces of darkness? Here are some reminders:

1. Crown Jesus as your Lord.
   He is the Captain of our souls and salvation (Heb.2:10). Only those totally yielded to Him will have His protection and wisdom to overcome the wiles of the devil. “He is our Refuge and Strength, a very present Help in trouble” (Psa.46:1).


2. Have faith in Him and His promises.
   Ours is a fight of faith, and faith will overcome the world and the devil (1 John 5:4). In Him we are “more than conquerors” and He will always cause us to walk in triumph. He promises us that “No weapon fashioned against us will prosper” (Isa.54:17; Rom.8:37; 2 Cor.2:14). Victory belongs to the Lord, just as the battle is His also. Faith pleases God and gives hope (Heb.11: 1, 6). The Bible tells us to resist the devil by faith and he will flee from us (James 4:7; 1 Pet.5:9).


3. Put on the whole Armor of God (Eph.6:10-18).
   No soldier can expect to win the battle without fully armed. We need God’s armor because “we are not fighting against flesh and blood, but against principalities and powers of this dark world in the heavenly realms” (Eph.6:12). Intellectual knowledge, physical strength and other skills will not help us or protect us. But the whole Armor of God will.


4. Walk in the Power of the Holy Spirit.
   Jesus gives us this promise: “You will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes upon you” (Acts 1:8). The Holy Spirit in us “is greater than he that is in the world” (1 John 4:4). Before Jesus went into the desert to be tempted of the devil, Luke tells us that He was baptized by the Holy Spirit and “full of the Spirit and was led by Spirit into the desert”. (3:21-22; 4:1). That is why He was able to resist the devil and overcome all his temptations. We need to do the same: “walk in the Spirit and you will not fulfill the lusts of the flesh” and we are to always “keep in step with the Spirit” (Gal.5:16, 25) so that we may be assured of victory.


5. Worship the Lord always.
   There is power in praise and worship. The Bible says “He is enthroned in the praise of His people” (Psa.22:3). The KJV says, “He inhabits the praise of Israel (His people)”. In other words, when we worship and praise God, He comes into our midst and protects or fights for us. Israel often experienced that many times (2 Chron.20:20-24). Let us learn this lesson well!
