FEET SHOD WITH THE GOSPEL OF PEACE
(Spiritual Warfare: SW 10)
The third piece of the Christian armor is having “your feet shod with the preparation of the Gospel of peace”. The NIV translates it as “your feet fitted with the readiness that comes from the Gospel of Peace” (Eph.6:14). The idea behind this is to advance the Kingdom of God by preaching “the Gospel, which is the power of God unto salvation to everyone who believes” (Rom.1:16). This is the Gospel that brings righteousness and peace in Christ Jesus.
The feet carry the soldier everywhere and the shoes or sandals protect them from the burning heat of the ground, the thorns and sharp stones along the roads that he walked on. The sandals enable him to advance in the battlefield without hindrance so that he can carry out his duties effectively. The Christian soldier wears the sandals of the Gospel of Peace in the battle for souls, “shooting” the opposing force with the Gospel of Christ which is the power of God for salvation. Hence the Bible says, “How beautiful are the feet of those who preach the Gospel of Peace, who bring glad tidings of good things” (Rom.10:15; Isa.52:7).
The Gospel is the good news of peace and deliverance to souls in darkness and enslaved by the devil. In this spiritual battle the Gospel of Christ triumphs over the evil forces and brings peace and salvation in setting the captives free. Our Lord Himself said, “The Spirit of the Sovereign Lord is upon Me, for He has anointed Me to preach the Gospel to the poor, heal the broken hearted and set captives free” (Luke 4:18-19). The Christian witness goes everywhere with his feet shod with the Gospel of Peace. When he does that faithfully, God says he has “beautiful feet”. Are your feet “beautiful” in God’s sight?
The old adage says, “The best defense is attack”. In the soccer field they find this is so also. While this passage of Scripture in Eph.6:10-18 is about the defensive armour the Christian soldier wears in spiritual warfare, the Gospel shoes are for advancing – attacking the enemy with the powerful Gospel of Peace. When there is war in the soul, the message of peace is a powerful weapon in the hands of the anointed soldier of Christ. We found this to be so in our Team’s ministry in Mission Trips to various places. In the midst of many uncertainties, especially when the terrorists are on the warpath, Gospel of Peace brings salvation to many fearful hearts.
Our Lord said, “In the world you will have tribulation, but be of good cheer; I have overcome the world” (John 16:33). Jesus is the Prince of Peace, and His message is the Gospel of Peace for a troubled world. The bearer of His message wears the shoes bringing the good news of peace in His Name. Proverbs tell us that “As cold waters to a thirsty soul, so is Good news from a far country” (Prov.25:25). The good news of Heaven (“the far country”) in Christ Jesus the Son of God from Heaven, quenches the “thirsty soul” fighting for survival in the spiritual and emotional war, for that is good news to him. Let us be the “beautiful feet” bearing that Good News! Let us be Christ’s Ambassadors that bring hope and peace to a lost and fearful world!
